Welcome to Mrs. Blackwood's 8th grade Class Website
August 16, 2017
The eighth grade year is pivotal for students as they prepare to enter high school. I appreciate your support and look forward to working with you to educate your child.
As I am sure you know, all students will have their own Chromebook to use both at school and at home. Students do not need to have internet access at home to complete assignments. All assignments will be posted on Google Classroom.
Language Arts: Our language arts curriculum revolves around literature.
This trimester we will be reading/analyzing An American Plague by Jim Murphy and Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. The books revolve around the Yellow Fever Epidemic that hit Philadelphia in 1793. Through the use of literature, articles, videos and other pertinent sources, students will be able to answer the unit driving question: “The Human Condition: How do we respond when faced with adversity?”
Vocabulary: Throughout the school year, we will be working on vocabulary. We use the Sadlier Connect Vocabulary Program. The units include a non-fiction article using the words, definitions, parts of speech, antonyms/synonyms, words in context. Each student will have their own workbook.
History: Our US history curriculum covers the years of English Colony settlement to the Reconstruction following the Civil War.
This trimester will focus on The English Colonies through the Revolutionary War. Through the use of our textbook, literature, articles (SHEG), videos and other pertinent sources, students will be able to understand how our country came to be.
I also recommend that you have an Aeries account so that you can check your child's grades and academic progress. If you do not have an Aeries account, see the office. FYI: Your student has an Aeries account that they should be accessing regularly!
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about this or anything else. I will do my very best to reply within twenty-four hours. I can be reached by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 209-354-2700, extension 115.
